Tayrona - Petrobras: Pioneering Deepwater Drilling Logistics in the Caribbean Sea

Taking on a Groundbreaking Challenge
In 2007, I played a leading role in the logistics and engineering management for Petrobras' first deepwater exploration project in Colombia—the drilling of the Araza-1 well, located 60 km offshore from Santa Marta.
This was a complex, high-risk operation, requiring seamless coordination across maritime, air, and shorebase logistics to ensure safe and efficient drilling activities.
My Role & Responsibilities
- ✅ Led the design, procurement, and construction of key logistics infrastructure to support offshore operations.
- ✅ Negotiated and secured the Marianas rig from Transocean, ensuring favorable contract terms.
- ✅ Managed the rig mobilization from Houston (Gulf of Mexico) to the Colombian Caribbean Sea using Anchor Handling Tug Supply (AHTS) vessels.
- ✅ Optimized offshore supply chain logistics, ensuring on-time material and equipment deliveries to the drilling site.
- ✅ Developed air and maritime operations to efficiently transport personnel and critical supplies.
🔹 Air Transportation: The Role of Helicopter Operations
- 🚁 Rapid Crew Changes: Helicopters were essential for efficient offshore worker rotations.
- 🚁 Emergency Response: Established air evacuation protocols for medical and operational emergencies.
- 🚁 Strategic Flight Planning: Coordinated flights between Santa Marta and the offshore drilling site, ensuring compliance with aviation regulations.

- ✔ Developed and onboarded local contractors, reducing reliance on foreign suppliers.
- ✔ Hired and trained specialized personnel for maritime and air operations.
